Black Friday online sales $7.4 billion

Black Friday broke record online sales in the US with $7.4 billion purchased by online shoppers according to Adobe Analytics which highlighted three trends:

• Average order value grew 5.9% over Black Friday last year to a record of $168.
• Smartphones accounted for 39% of online sales – $2.9 billion on Black Friday, up 21% over last year.
• Online shoppers drove to stores to pick up their online orders with a 43% jump in purchases completed online and picked up in-store (BOPIS).

Costco’s site experienced some technical trouble on Thanksgiving, potentially costing the company millions of dollars in lost sales. The retail and deals site Love the Sales estimates the loss could reach $11 million. Love the Sales analyzed data from the amount of time that the Costco site was down and the total online sales revenue from last year, as well as other factors such as traffic and seasonality, to come up with the $11 million figure.
