Welcome to PaymentsNEXT, a new digital industry publication covering disruptive news that impacts the payments industry globally.

It’s an exciting time for an industry that has seen more disruption in the past five years than the previous 50 years in the banking and financial industry.

More than 12,000 fintech disruptors

McKinsey & Company estimate there are more than 12,000 fintech startup companies looking to disrupt the payments industry. It also predicts payments industry revenues will continue to grow an average of 6% reaching $2.3 trillion in 2019.

In their Global Payments 2015: A Healthy Industry Confronts Disruption report, McKinsey identifies four important trends for the industry:

  • Non-bank digital entrants will transform the customer experience, reshaping the payments and broader financial services landscape.
  • Modernization of domestic payments infrastructures is underway.
  • Cross-border payments inefficiencies are opening doors for new players.
  • Digitization in retail banking has important implications for transaction bankers.
