While Amazon is making efforts to lower prices online, Walmart seems to have a new strategy. Raising prices for online products.
Yes, you read it correctly. Walmart’s slogan of “Everyday low prices” may be giving way to – “Pay slightly more online.”
The Wall Street Journal tipped off readers that Walmart is raising prices for some grocery store and household products like Kraft macaroni and cheese, Colgate toothbrushes and bags of Purina dog food.
A Walmart spokesperson explained that some items are more expensive to ship to online buyers than selling in store. They maintain the company is still offering the everyday low prices it has always promised as well as matching Amazon’s online prices.
Time will tell if Walmart’s strategy will get online buyers to buy bigger orders or more expensive items that can be shipped profitably. In the meantime, they may actually increase in-store shopping with continued low prices.
